Fake Spring

Well, today is technically the 2nd day of Spring. Which is a crock of bull considering this is my current view….

Tomorrow was supposed to be the high school season opener for the softball team and we were all excited, but it doesn’t seem likely that it’s gonna happen.

And because I refuse to accept that Spring is still eluding us, Sugar Dog and I ventured out for a walk. And it was pretty much miserable, but we did it.

I got a couple of loads of laundry done on this snow day, which was supposed to actually be a snow makeup day for the kids, and my workout. Speaking of which, I have discovered a new workout plan. Actually, it’s not new at all, but perhaps it has been forgotten. It’s calisthenics! Old school exercise. And more specifically, it is this book, Convict Conditioning. It has completely changed the way I am currently going about my fitness. Mainly because I hit a major wall with weightlifting. My joints were constantly hurting and I was just really burnt out on the whole thing. So I somehow stumbled across this book and ordered it mainly because I was looking for a way to stay fit without killing my joints. And I absolutely LOVE it! I will update my progress in another post, but I am just a little over a month in and definitely plan to continue this method for the foreseeable future.

And just because it is rare that we are all here and able to sit down at the table together at the same time, and even rarer that EVERYONE loves the same thing, here is the recipe for what we had tonight. Chicken Quesadillas. Nothing fancy, but a simple and quick weeknight meal. (Forgot to get a pic, sorry)

  • 1/2 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into thin strips
  • small onion, sliced
  • red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1/2 C salsa
  • 1/2 C canned black beans, rinsed
  • 6″ tortillas
  • 1 1/2 C shredded cheese
  1. Spray skillet and cook chicken.
  2. Add peppers and onion & cook until crisp-tender.
  3. Stir in salsa.
  4. Spoon 1/4 C chicken mixture onto half of tortilla.
  5. Fold over & cook on sprayed griddle or skillet until lightly browned on both sides.
  6. Enjoy with your favorite sides!

Home Alone on a Rainy Saturday <3

Brian’s at work, Katie’s on a field trip, Hannah spent the night with a friend last night and I’m home alone with the dogs listening to the rain.  It has been SO long since this has happened.  Coffee is going down and I’ve got the thunder for background music.  I love this day and just wanted to take a minute to recognize it.  🙂

This is Sugar Dog.  She’s a storm lover, just like her mama.

Cold & Rainy Sunday

It is Sunday morning and I am sitting in my chair contemplating what to do with this day.

I’ve got 2 sicky-poo daughters upstairs sleeping and I am hoping that by allowing them to sleep in today, they are gonna wake up feeling better this morning.  They went to bed last night with red cheeks & sore throats and Hannah didn’t even eat supper.  Now my throat is a little tickly this morning.  😦  So, we are staying in and resting today.  Which really stinks because we were to start a new Sunday school series this morning and now we are missing the first one.

I also have one exhausted husband upstairs sleeping who has had quite a hard transition from first to second shift.  For the past 3 years, he has been accustomed to getting up at about 10 AM.  He is now getting up at 3:30 AM and it has definitely taken a toll on him.  All most definitely worth it though.  We’ve all been enjoying him being on day shift.  Hopefully it won’t be too much longer until he is used to his new routine.

Right now it is storming, dark & grey outside.  I am thinking that perhaps some crochet or reading may be in order for the day.  Speaking of crochet, I don’t think I ever posted a picture of this afghan that I started last year.

Well here it is all finished & being put to good use.

This is the warmest thing!  I love it.  However, I probably would never make one like it again.  It is actually 4 pieces that you then sew together and I didn’t enjoy that part of it at all.  On the one side, it looks really nice, but on the other side, you can very plainly see the seams, so I’m not crazy about that.  But I do like snuggling with my girls underneath it. 🙂

I’m also working on something SOOO cute right now!  I’m not even gonna say what it is, I’ll just show you when it’s done.  It’s so stinkin’ cute!  But I need to get over to Mamaw’s house because I’m stuck on this one part & can’t seem to figure it out.

It is certainly yucky looking outside right now…

Rather cold out there right now too.  A typical spring day.  I think I’ll put the coffee on, sit here in the quiet and listen to the thunder and maybe get my bible study done before everyone starts waking up.

Have a great Sunday.

Switching out the winter clothes with the summer ones…

And that’s just the beginning.  I’m spring cleaning this week.  The girls are on spring break, so they’ll be outside playing most of the time.  Brian starts his new job today, so he’ll be gone & I’ll pretty much have the place to myself except for the occasional, “We’re thirsty!” or “We’re hungry!” or “She hit me!”, so I’m planning to hit the cleaning pretty hard. I’ve already taken the handle & glass pane off of the oven door & scrubbed them both.  They were filthy!  And I’ve got the oven auto-cleaning right now.  Later I’m going to pull out the oven & fridge and clean behind and under both. And try to get the rest of the kitchen done today if at all possible.  I’m tired just thinking about it!

We are redecorating the girls’ room right now and they want to have a garage sale so they can make some money off of all of their old stuff.  So…at the same time that I’m spring cleaning, I’ll also be purging out things for a garage sale.

All of this on a day that’s supposed to be 81 degrees.  I can already hear my bicycle calling to me…

A Walk Around The Yard

Here is what is blooming so far in my yard this Spring.

I know you’ve already seen the planter that my MIL got me, but I thought it looked pretty with my Clematis & Columbine in the background.

Next is my weird Clematis.  Do you see how it’s fuller at the bottom, then there’s nothing, then a little sprig at the top?  It’s bloomed that way for 4 years now.  Any suggestions on what I can do to fix it?

The weird Clematis

It may be growing weirdly, but the blooms sure are pretty.

This is where my beautiful Morning Glories were growing last year and unfortunately they didn’t come back.  Not sure what happened, but I am sad.  Will try again this year.

This is the Bleeding Heart that my sweet Mamaw gave to me last year.  I came out to check on it earlier in the Spring and there was nothing there and I thought it had died.  But when I looked again yesterday, there it was.  I almost cried I was so happy!  This is Katie’s favorite kind of flower.

Here are my garden boxes ready to go.  I hope to get some veggies planted this weekend.

I have 3 tiny tomato plants growing already.  Guess they are a product of last year’s crop.

And last but not least, I can’t forget these guys who hang out next to the Forsythia. 🙂

Happy Easter

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…

My Forsythia Bush

This is my little forsythia bush.  I planted it last year, so it’s not very big yet, but the pretty white blossoms are sure pretty to look at.

And sitting on the porch today, there was a lovely breeze coming through, and the smell was heavenly.

I had to trim it up a little, so I couldn’t resist bringing some of that lovely smell into the house.  (Even though in a couple of days I will have a ton of dead white blossoms all over the floor.  It’s okay, it’s worth it.)

Oh, and by the way, it was 70-something degrees here today.  So, do you wanna know what I did?  I broke out my pasty white legs and bravely donned a pair of shorts.  It didn’t last long.  I was sitting out on the porch when a car came by.  The driver swerved left and right, slammed on the brakes and yelled something about being blinded by a great white light.  Thankfully, no one was injured, so  I quickly retreated back into the house and away from the scene of the accident.
